A Sussex orchestra of international repute, The Hanover Band, together with The Hanover Band Chorus, a group of soloist standard singers, will perform Handel’s Messiah in Steyning Parish Church on 15th December. This will give the chance to see the performance locally – and before it goes to London!
This seasonal masterpiece is brought to Steyning by the Friends of Steyning Parish Church and should prove a wonderful start to the Christmas festivities.
The Hanover Band concentrates on music of the Hanoverian period and includes some of the UK’s best period instrument specialists.
“Strings are gleaming and engaged, their woodwind sublime, their brass bright and flexible, their percussion alert…” Independent on Sunday.
The Hanover Band, formed in London by Caroline Brown in 1980, is known internationally for its performances and recordings of 18th and 19th-century music which are described as ‘revelatory, luscious, outstanding and illuminating’.
Their distinguished players are committed to education work, teaching in the top music conservatoires in the UK, including the Royal College of Music and Royal Academy of Music.
The Hanover Band is directed by Andrew Arthur who also plays the harpsichord; Theresa Caudle is Leader of the orchestra.
This is one of many events which the Friends of Steyning Parish Church organise. In October, they marked the 500th anniversary of an intricately carved Tudor screen which resides in the church, with a world premiere of ‘Catalina Suite’ by Shoreham’s Alex Rider and performed by harp quartet, Glissando. There was also ‘Fun with the Tudors’ for children including art, stories, dressing up and dancing.
The Friends of Steyning Parish Church is a community organisation comprising people from across the community of Steyning and beyond, whether church goers or not. New members are welcome; membership is free. Members receive invitations to events and news about the church.
