Mastering the Art of Stonework: A Journey of Knowledge and Creativity

A fascinating talk from Master Craftsman, Adam Stone, delighted the 50-strong audience at Steyning Parish Church on 8 October.

Adam outlined his unique career which began with English Heritage as an apprentice stonemason in 1979. Since then, he has worked on the conservation of numerous churches, castles and  many notable heritage buildings all around the country as well as many new build projects.

He explained that while he and his team at Chichester Stoneworks make great use of the latest technology, the traditional skills of the stonemason remain fundamental to their work.

Highlights during Adam’s career have included oversight of the quadrangle at Buckingham Palace, the relocation of Temple Bar, completion of Lancing College Chapel and work on Hampton Court Palace.

Adam is now Managing Director of Chichester Stoneworks. Adam’s fascinating talk followed the Friends’ AGM and drinks.
