9. The Porch

 If you turn round and look at the doorway you have just come through you will see a distinctive “beak” design – this also dates from the twelfth century. It  is one of the original entrances to the church (the others were the west door, now long demolished, and the north door, closed up for centuries).

In the porch there are two ancient grave-covers which were found around the churchyard and date from before the Norman conquest in 1066. The one on the right (next to the toilet door) is interesting as it is a Viking design – a sort of flattened house roof.
